Love – The Supreme Test

A touch of the Master’s Hand

‘Twas battered and scarred and the auctioneer
Thought it scarcely worth his while
To waist much time on the old violin,
But he held it up with a smile.
“What am I bidden good folks?” her cried,
“Who’ll start the bidding for me?”
A dollar – a dollar – now two, only two
Two dollars and who’ll make it three?”
“Three dollars once, three dollars twice,
Going for three – but no!”
From the room far back, a gray haired man
Came forward and picked up the bow;
Then wiping the dust from the old violin,
And tightening up all the strings,
He played a melody pure and sweet,
As sweet as the angel sings.
The music ceased and the auctioneer
With a voice that was quite and low,
Said, “What am I bid from the old violin?”
And he held it up with the bow.
“A thousand dollars and who’ll make it two?
Two thousand and who’ll make it three?
Three thousand once, and three thousand twice,
And going and gone!” said he.
The people cheered, but some of them cried,
“We do not quite understand –
What changed it’s worth?” Swift came the reply:
“The tough of the Master’s hand!”
And many a man with a life out of tune,
And battered and torn with sin,
Is auctioned cheap to a thoughtless crowd,
Much like the old violin.
A “mess of pottage”, a glass of wine,
A game – and he travels on.
He’s going once and going twice, He’s going and almost gone!
But the Master comes, and the foolish crowd
Never can quite understand
The worth of a soul and the change that’s wrought
By the touch of the Master’s hand.

This poem somewhat describes the life of the Apostle Peter. Simon, son of Jonas was a diamond in the rough. He and his brother Andrew were fishermen on the Sea of Galilee working for their father who was in partnership with Zebedee the father of James and John. Peter was the natural born leader of the crew. He was rough and ready, boastful and proud, a man of great physical courage who rushed headlong into things without due consideration.

One day a man beheld this “diamond in the rough.” This Master of men recognized Simon’s latent abilities and inherent talents. He laid hold of Simon. He gave him a new name, Peter, the rock. It was a name descriptive of the renewed personality that would come to Simon. Under the wise leadership and counsel of this man Simon was tempered, trained, filled with the Holy Spirit and used to the honor and glory of God. From that day until this the world has never been able to quite understand the change” that was wrought by the touch of the Master’s hand.” We can understand to a degree this change that was wrought as we begin to focus three questions Jesus of Nazareth asked Simon, son of Jonas.

Peter and Andrew in one boat, and James and John in another had spent the night fishing upon the Galilean Sea. In the morning with empty boats they came to shore, cold and tired. A great crowd thronged the shoreline, pressing about Jesus of Nazareth “to hear the Word of God.” Peter and Andrew beached their boat and began to wash the nets. Jesus came over and sat down in Simon’s boat and continued teaching the people. When he had finished his sermon He turned to Peter and commanded: “Launch out into the deep and put down your nets for a catch.” Peter replied, “Master, we have toiled all night. We have taken nothing. Nevertheless at you word I will let down the nets.” In a moment the nets were miraculously full and yet they did not break. There were so many fish that they filled both the boats almost to the sinking point. Peter was astonished and falling upon his knees he said, “Depart from me, O Lord for I am a sinful man.” In the presence of Christ, Peter was filled with a sense of his own unworthiness.”

Jesus never turns a needy soul away empty. He answered, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” Peter forsook all and followed Jesus. This is the first question that Jesus asked Peter: “Will you follow me?’ The Master said, “Come, Follow” --- That was all, “Earth’s joys grew dim. My soul went after Him. I rose and followed – That was all, Who would not follow, if he heard His call.”

Some follow with a greater degree of loyalty than others; some follow afar off, others snuggle right up close to the Good Shepherd. But I feel certain that each of you like Peter have answered the question: “Will you follow me?” in the affirmative. Where He leads me I will follow.
When Peter forsook his old way of life to follow Jesus he entered upon a period of glorious fellowship with the Son of Man. For two and a half years he journeyed with Christ throughout the regions of Judea, Samaria and Galilee. He listened as Jesus taught the multitudes concerning God and His Kingdom. He watched as Jesus gave food and drink to the hungry and thirsty; hope and peace to the sick, worn and weary; forgiveness of sin to the spiritually sick. He was with Christ as He mounted the wave of public acclaim and popularity. Peter beheld the rising wave of opposition and the decreasing popularity. At last there came the time when the shadow of a cross began to appear upon the pathway. The hour was at hand when the Son of God must for the last time go up to Jerusalem, there to offer Himself, the Lamb of God without spot and without blemish as a sacrifice for the sin of man.. but before this fateful journey southward was begun He would spend some time alone with His disciples. The spot chosen for this spiritual retreat was in the mountain fastness of Caesarea Philippi to the northeast of Galilee. So Jesus in company with the twelve went northward and came to Caesarea Philippi.

It was here that the second great question was asked: “Whom say ye that I am?” This question was asked of all the disciples. Peter, the spokesmen answered: “Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.” This is the only answer that is satisfactory. In response to this declaration of faith Jesus replied, “Blessed art thou, Simon son of Jonas, Flesh and blood hath not reveled this unto thee, but my Father who is in Heaven.”

We have given many answers to this question. Some have called Him the great reformer, the matchless Teacher, the Way Shower of God, and the best man that ever lived. He is all of this and more besides. These hold Him within the bounds of mere humanity, but He is more than a man. He is the Christ, the Messiah, the one sent from God who bore my “sin in His body on the tree.” He is God become man, not man become God, but God become man to reveal unto me the very heart and nature of God. After two and a half years of fellowship with this man Peter recognized His essential deity and gave expression to it.

Who say ye that He is? Is He to you more than a man to follow, more than a proclaimer of a philosophy to practice. Is He the One who was wounded “for your transgressions, and who was bruised for your iniquities?” Is He your God whom you trust for your eternal salvation? It is possible to follow Jesus, His teachings and His practices and still not enter into the joys of Heaven. (Compare Matthew 7:21-23) What is the will of God? Jesus answers that in John 6:28-29. “This is the work (will) of God that ye believe on Him whom He hath sent.” Do you believe on Him. Have you confessed with Peter: “Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.”
From this mountain top of confession Peter descended into the valley of denial. After the arrest of Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane Peter following afar off, came at last into the judgment hall. He did not go and join himself with Christ, but he went and sat with the enemies of Jesus. Three times he was accused of being a member of the band of disciples and three times, first by simple statement, then with a statement and an oath, and finally with a statement and God’s name uttered in blasphemy – he declared that he knew not the Christ. Then the cock crowed, Peter recalled that Christ had warned concerning this denial, and then looking across the judgment hall his eyes came into contact with the eyes of Jesus. Peter went out and wept bitter tears of true repentance.

There had been a public denial; there must be a public confession. Some days after the resurrection Peter in company with the other disciples returned to Galilee. There they spent a night fishing fruitlessly. In the morning as their boat was heading shoreward they heard a voice coming to them across the water: “Children have you caught any meat? Cast your net on the right side of the boat.” They did s o and were unable to draw it into the boat so great were the number of fishes. John said unto Peter, “It is the Lord.” Peter leaped into the water and went ashore to Jesus. Jesus had prepared a breakfast for His disciples and after partaking they went for a stroll along the beach. Jesus turned and said to Peter, “Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me more than all these?” Peter answered, “Yea Lord, thou knowest that I love thee.” This was the third question Jesus asked Peter. “Peter will you follow me? Peter who am I? Peter do you love me? This is the most important question.

It was not until he settled this question that Peter was truly used in the service of Christ. Never again did he deny his Lord. You do not deny that what you love. Never again did he forsake his Master. You do not forsake your true love. Let me ask you, you have these many years been following Jesus, you have confessed Him as Lord and Savior: do you love Him? This is the supreme question. What this congregation truly loves Jesus there will be no problem of financial support. We adequately support the one we love. There will be no problem of Church attendance. We want to meet with the one we love. The sin problem will be settled. For when you love Jesus, there will be desire to flirt with the world, the flesh and the devil. There will be no problem of leadership and service. We delight to serve sacrificially the one we love.

Jesus demands that we love Him because He is love. “Greater love hath no man than this, than that a man lay down his life for his friends.” Last week we read in the paper of a foreign student a Southern College who was unable to swim. His friend, an American student, was in the pool and in trouble and drowning. The foreign student jumped in and managed to save the American student from drowning at the cost of his own life. “No greater love.”

            My Jesus, I love thee, I know thou art mine, for thee all the followers  of sin I resign;
My gracious redeemer, my Savior art thou; If ever I loved thee, My Jesus, ‘tis now.
            I love thee, because thou hast first love me, And purchased my pardon on Calvary’s tree;
I love thee for wearing the thorns on Thy brow; If I ever loved thee, My Jesus, ‘tis now.

Placed by God’s Providence

Placed by God’s Providence

In My Daddy’s Shoes

In my Daddy’s shoes
In my daddy’s ties
In my Daddy’s shadow
By my daddy’s side
Looking at his living
As the days go by
I can see my Jesus
In my daddy’s eyes
Oh to see God living
In my dad each day
Makes me want to be like him
In every single way
So my Lord I ask you
Don’t let me go astray
But keep me on the right path
That leads to you I pray
Charles E. Garrison

Isaiah 44:24 Thus says the LORD, your Redeemer, and the one who formed you from the womb, "I, the LORD, am the maker of all things, Stretching out the heavens by Myself And spreading out the earth all alone,
I cannot but help each day to give praise and thanks to my Lord for the family, community, and nation the He has placed me in. I could have been born to evil parents that only conceived me through their own pleasures and really did not care to mold me into a better person than they were. I never would have met my loving brothers and sister, known their wonderful children, would not have the security of their unconditional love. If I was born other than somewhere God had placed me, I never would have meet my wife, never would have had the wonderful children I have been blessed with. I could have been born into a hostile place where the depraved ran through the streets without restraint. I could have been born into a country that was desolate and did not have the resources to provide for the opportunities that I have been able to take advantage of. If I had been born other that where God had placed me, I would not have been equipped to survive in a foreign environment. I thank God that I did not choose the time and place or the relationships of my life, as I have always been given to make the unwise decisions. As I grow older on the path that I am traveling through my short journey here, I each day come to appreciate the subtle instruction of my father who through the years gave me freely. In my youth I never cherished the wisdom of his words, never accepted his advice, never followed his lead, but now that he has gone home to his Heavenly Father, I have come to understand him through a relationship with his Lord Jesus Christ, and now realize that my father was the greatest treasure found in this world. So many times I hear people say “only if I had it to do over again.” I would not want that opportunity, I have paid the price for where I have come, accepted the gift of God for where I am going, but if could have changed one thing in my life, it would have been to listen to my father. Yet today I do listen to my father, as his words ever return to me because his instruction was founded in God’s truth. "Train up a child in the way he should go, Even when he is old he will not depart from it." (Proverbs 22:6)

I admit there are those who have had a more fortunate life than I, probably more than not. I also know that there are many more who have a less fortunate life than I. The greatest quote of my father was “a little faith in a big God.” I thought that was a cute cliché in the earlier days but know I see the greater truth in his words. My father was not living for this world but kept his eye on the greater world to come, the Kingdom of Heaven. This is where his hope was, this is what his faith was in, the Word of God, Jesus Christ. My younger brother nailed the right description of my father, Grace. All the bad I have done, all the pain I have caused him, the years of great disappointment he endured because of me, all the thankless nights of little sleep, and all because I would not listen or obey his word, yet his love was unconditional towards me. "We have come to know and have believed the love which God has for us. God is love, and the one who abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him." (1 John 4:16)

I have rebelled against my father, I have rebelled against my family, I have rebelled against my community, I have rebelled against my nation, and most assuredly I have rebelled again God. In all of my rebellions God who is Love never withheld His love from me. "The one who does not love does not know God, for God is love."  (1John 4:8) God knows each and every one of us, even before the foundation of the world. "Just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we would be holy and blameless before Him. In love" (Ephesians 1:4) From the Garden of Eden each one of us came with a perfect plan for our lives. But as Adam and Eve we fell into a life of rebellion from God and have lived outside of His will, outside of His plan and purpose for our lives.

We cannot blame God when our life is not as we wish that it would be. The truth is that even for a follower of Jesus, still life will be filled with trials and tribulations. The difference is that for the Christian we have an advocate sitting at the right hand of God. "Who is the one who condemns? Christ Jesus is He who died, yes, rather who was raised, who is at the right hand of God, who also intercedes for us." (Romans 8:34) What greater power can one have to lead him through this world and having the promise of the next? "In My Father's house are many dwelling places; if it were not so, I would have told you; for I go to prepare a place for you." (John 14:2) Living out of the will of God leads to a life of hopelessness and ultimately to certain death. Why I wonder would any chose this fate at the end of their journey here? It is the choice that all must make. Can we not look around and see the consequences of that choice made in the Garden of Eden so long ago by the first parents of mankind? Cannot we see through history the sacrifices God has made to restore our relationship with Him that we may have live abundantly now and forever more? "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life." (John 3:16)

We each have a responsibility in the providence of God to fulfill towards our parents, towards our family, towards our community and towards our nation. I have a responsibility to act on the wise words of instruction that my father gave to me in the many years of his upbringing. We have a responsibility towards our parents in sharing the truth that we have come into through the knowledge of Jesus Christ, and also towards our children. "For wisdom is protection just as money is protection, But the advantage of knowledge is that wisdom preserves the lives of its possessors." (Ecclesiastes 7:12) We have a responsibility towards our community in that we are to be the light of truth in a darkened place. "But he who practices the truth comes to the Light, so that his deeds may be manifested as having been wrought in God." (John 3:21) We have a responsibility to our nation that through us they will have the opportunity to come to know the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ, and also that the Word of God will be known to all that have an ear to hear. "Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age." (Matthew 28:19-20)

In the providence of God we are all faced with a decision that must be made now, for the hour of salvation is now. "For He says, "At the acceptable time I listened to you, And on the day of salvation I helped you." Behold, now is "the acceptable time," behold, now is "the day of salvation" (2 Corinthians 6:2) All will be judged for our deeds while we are here in this life after we have passed through to the next. "And I heard a voice from heaven, saying, "Write, 'Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on!'" "Yes," says the Spirit, "so that they may rest from their labors, for their deeds follow with them." (Revelation 14:13) This truth must be addressed and all must be made aware for the Lord came once to save, and through us His work must be done. Jesus our Lord and Savior is coming again like a thief in the night. "For you yourselves know full well that the day of the Lord will come just like a thief in the night." (1 Thessalonians 5:2) When Jesus returns He will judge those whom He does not know. "But by His word the present heavens and earth are being reserved for fire, kept for the Day of Judgment and destruction of ungodly men." (2 Peter 3:7)

Every man has a choice; every man chooses the path he travels. He can travel the path of the world which leads to destruction and stand before God with nothing of value to Him and face His wrath. He can choose to follow Jesus through this world on the path of the Kings narrow highway to the Glorious Kingdom of God. To which are you a citizen? "Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were making an appeal through us; we beg you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God." (2 Corinthians 5:20)

In the Garden of Eden God did not speak us into existence but formed us from the dust. He personally made each and every one of us and holds a special love for each. The potter knelt over each one of us a breathed His Spirit into us giving us life. "Then the LORD God formed man of dust from the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being." (Genesis 2:7) We are created in His image made to grow into His image and have a personal relationship with Him in the bonds of His love. Ask yourself, years from now, if the Lord wills, when your loved ones think back on you, will they see the image of Jesus, or will they only see a lost memory of what should have been, planned by God’s providence?

He Must Reign

He Must Reign

After these things I heard something like a loud voice of a great multitude in heaven, saying, "Hallelujah! Salvation and glory and power belong to our God; because His judgments are true and righteous; for He has judged the great harlot who was corrupting the earth with her immorality, and He has avenged the blood of His bond-servants on her." And a second time they said, "Hallelujah! Her smoke rises up forever and ever." And the twenty-four elders and the four living creatures fell down and worshiped God who sits on the throne saying, "Amen. Hallelujah!" And a voice came from the throne, saying, "Give praise to our God, all you His bond-servants, you who fear Him, the small and the great." Then I heard something like the voice of a great multitude and like the sound of many waters and like the sound of mighty peals of thunder, saying, "Hallelujah! For the Lord our God, the Almighty, reigns. Marriage of the Lamb “Let us rejoice and be glad and give the glory to Him, for the marriage of the Lamb has come and His bride has made herself ready." It was given to her to clothe herself in fine linen, bright and clean; for the fine linen is the righteous acts of the saints. Then he *said to me, "Write, 'Blessed are those who are invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb.'" And he *said to me, "These are true words of God." Then I fell at his feet to worship him. But he *said to me, "Do not do that; I am a fellow servant of yours and your brethren who hold the testimony of Jesus; worship God. For the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy."  (Revelation 19:1-10)

“Hallelujah, the Lord God omnipotent reigneth.” This is the central message of the Book of Revelation. The book was written to the people of God who were in a time of sin, suffering and sorrow such as the Church has never experienced. “Truth was on the scaffold, wrong was on the throne.”

The book opens with a wonderful picture of the Risen Triumphant Christ. He is holding the Universal Church in His hand. He is clad in the garments of royalty. He moves inflexibly through history on feet of burnished bronze. He speaks to every age with a voice like the sound of many waters. The sword of truth issues from His mouth. He identifies Himself as the Risen One: “I died, behold I am alive for evermore, I have the keys of death and Hades.” From the very beginning of the book, we are made aware that the ultimate outcome of the world’s history is never in doubt for the Lord Christ omnipotent reigns.

In chapter 4 before all history unfolds we are transported to heaven and are shown a throne. The one sitting upon the throne is the creator of all things, the all powerful Lord of the universe. His kingdom is from everlasting to everlasting.

In chapter 5 we behold, “a Lamb standing as though it had been slain.” The book of the world’s history is even in the hands of God. Only the Lamb is found worthy to open the book and unfold that history. All history is in the hand of Him who was crucified for our sin and raised for our justification.

In the chapters that follow we behold the Church militant upon the field of history. She is engaged in an increasing battle against forces of evil, under the leadership of Satan. Three horseman, war, famine, pestilence, ride grimly through its pages. We behold a fourth rider on a white horse going forth “conquering and to conquer.” He rides against not with war, pestilence, and famine. Christ is continually “going forth” in history conquering and to conquer all the forces of evil arrayed against Him.

“Jesus shall reign where’re the sun
            does His successive journey run;
His kingdom stretch from shore to shore,
Till moons shall wax and wane no more.”

At the end Christ the Lamb is seen standing on Mount Zion with the redeemed of the ages safely gathered into Heaven. Satan and his forces of evil have been destroyed. We hear the heavenly host saying, “The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of His Christ, and He shall reign for ever and ever.” Revelation 11:15)

You will note that the Book of Revelation and the words of our text present Christ as reigning now not merely in some age to come. They speak not of a Christ who someday will be King but who is now King. The reign of Christ is not some dream for tomorrow but a reality in the here and now. Jesus is Lord of history.

I am aware that there are events in the world, and experiences in our own personal lives that seem to give a lie to this central teaching of our Reformed Faith. The atheist would say, “If there is a God He neither knows nor controls the events of time.” The deist would say, “God knows what is happening but has no control over the events of history.” But the Theist, whom we profess to be, affirm that “God both knows what is happening and is in control of the events of history.” We believe that God is not only transcendent, standing above the vents of time, but is also immanent, concerned about and involved in the events of time. You may well ask, “How does Christ Reign? How does He control the events of my life?”

I would answer:        1) Free to disobey but not free to escape.
                                    2) God limits the power of evil.
                                    3) God is not defeated by evil.

His is a continuing reign. “For He must reign until He has put all enemies under His feet.” (1 Corinthians 15:25) “Of the increase of His government and peace there shall be no end….the zeal of the Lord of host will perform this.”

A roman general was riding through the streets of Rome and when he saw a Christian making a coffin, he stopped and tauntingly asked him, “What is you Nazarene carpenter doing now?” without a moments hesitation, he replied, “He is making a coffin for the Roman Empire.” In the period between His Ascension and His return to this earth Jesus is engaged in putting down all rule and authority and power raised against the Kingdom of God.

The really decisive battle between the forces of good and evil was fought at the cross and the tomb. What remains are “pockets of resistance.” The words of Jesus, “I saw Satan fall as lightning from heaven,” take on real meaning in the lights that radiate from the open tomb.

The empty tomb was the worlds D-Day. The successful landing of the Allied forces on the beaches of Normandy signaled to a war weary world that the final outcome was no longer in doubt. Many battles and skirmishes still remained to be fought. Some would be won and some would be lost but the final victory was assured. Even Hitler and his generals knew this. The hand writing foretelling the ultimate defeat of the Axis Powers was inscribed upon the wall. It is so with the “war” between the Kingdom of God and the kingdom of Satan. The decisive battle was won on that first Easter when “up from the grave He arose with a mighty triumph o’er His foes.”

Christ Reigns! History is in the outstretched hand of the crucified and risen Lord. Is there a more thrilling message than this:
The strife is o’er, the battle done,
            The victory of life is won;
The song of triumph has begun. Alleluia!

This is a message of comfort. My times are in God’s hands.

This is a message of challenge. Since Jesus is Lord. Then we who follow in His train must crown Him King of our lives.

This is a message of commission. “The testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy,” said John. “The purpose of all preaching,” says John, “and of all that I have shown you is to tell you about Jesus.” We have a story to tell, a song to be sung, a message to tell and a Savior to show to the nations. The King has commissioned us, “Ye shall be witnesses unto me.”

We do not know the future. We do not know how many battles remain to be fought, how many rivers to span, how many mountains to cross, nor how many hot and dusty deserts to pass through but this we know: “The Lord God omnipotent reigneth.”

From victory unto victory His army shall He lead,
Till every foe is vanquished and Christ is Lord indeed.

Nephilim

Nephilim

I think the first thing we need to look at when discussing Nephilim is the definition of the word used in the verse. (Genesis 6:4) Using Strong's Exhaustive Concordance of the Bible the word Nephilim translates, nephiyl, nef-eel'; or nephil, nef-eel'; from H5307; prop., a feller, i.e. a bully or tyrant:--giant. nephal, (Chald.), nef-al'; corresp. to H5307:--fall (down), have occasion 5308. The real meaning is not necessarily a Giant but a bully.  If we use Nelsons Dictionary we have this added interpretation. NEPHILIM, a word of uncertain meaning (Genesis 6:4; Numbers 13:33), (NIV, NEB, NASB, RSV translations), translated as giants by the KJV and NKJV. Some scholars believe . . . were descended from famous rulers, outstanding leaders, and mighty warriors who lived before the Flood. These men, so the theory goes, gathered great harems and were guilty of the sin of polygamy. (from Nelson's Bible Dictionary, (c) 1986, Thomas Nelson Publishers)

Another view of the Nephilim is that they were particularly violent, strong, and infamous people who predated the marriages of Genesis 6:2. This viewpoint often explains the unions as intermarriage of the godly line of Seth described in with the ungodly line of Cain.

I think the mis-interpretation begins with Genesis 3:14-15 “The LORD God said to the serpent, "Because you have done this, Cursed are you more than all cattle, And more than every beast of the field; On your belly you will go, And dust you will eat All the days of your life; And I will put enmity Between you and the woman, And between your seed and her seed; He shall bruise you on the head, And you shall bruise him on the heel." God said he would put enmity between the seed of woman and the seed of Satan. The problem is that Satan is a fallen Angel and Angels do not have the ability to pro-create as we seen in Matthew 22:28-30 “In the resurrection, therefore, whose wife of the seven will she be? For they all had married her." But Jesus answered and said to them, "You are mistaken, not understanding the Scriptures nor the power of God.”For in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven”

I believe that man became so depraved in heart that he became exceedingly wicked in all his ways. This was true in the days of Noah and is also true in our day. Therefore I believe that the depravity of men enabled evil spirits to indwell them much like Legion in the Gospel of Mark 5:6-9 “Seeing Jesus from a distance, he ran up and bowed down before Him; and shouting with a loud voice, he *said, "What business do we have with each other, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I implore You by God, do not torment me!" For He had been saying to him, "Come out of the man, you unclean spirit!" And He was asking him, "What is your name?" And he *said to Him, "My name is Legion; for we are many." So I will stay with my position that there was no supernatural seed transferred to the children of the intermarriages. But I do not deny that the fallen angels may have been involved in the intermarriages of Seth’s seed and Cain’s seed. Going back to my statement that man had become so depraved and wicked at that time it would have been easy for demons to have indwelled them. This would have accounted for the increased wickedness of these people and their offspring. My argument against their being the seed of angels transferred to their children is that angels cannot pro-create and therefore as spiritual beings have no seed to share. But evil spirits can indwell people.

I think prior to the flood these wicked men came from the bloodline of Cain who was cursed by God for his killing of Abel. So cursed was Cain that God placed a mark on him that would warn others not to destroy him. (Why I do not know.) Genesis 4:14-15 “"Behold, You have driven me this day from the face of the ground; and from Your face I will be hidden, and I will be a vagrant and a wanderer on the earth, and whoever finds me will kill me." So the LORD said to him, "Therefore whoever kills Cain, vengeance will be taken on him sevenfold." And the LORD appointed a sign for Cain, so that no one finding him would slay him.”

Adam and Eve gave birth to a third son named Seth who once again began the bloodline of Jesus. Enoch and Noah we descendants of Seth and they are the ones I believe the sons of God came from. I believe the followers of Jesus Christ are the “Sons of God. Romans 8:16-17 “The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, heirs also, heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him so that we may also be glorified with Him.” So I believe the Sons of God referred to in Genesis 6 are those of the line of Seth who followed God in their faith. The Followers of Jesus are the adopted Son of God through Jesus Christ.

Cain’s bloodline was cursed and his seed was on the wicked path in rebellion against god. The house of Cain settled in the land of Nod east of Eden.

Genesis 6:1-4 “Now it came about, when men began to multiply on the face of the land, and daughters were born to them, that the sons of God saw that the daughters of men were beautiful; and they took wives for themselves, whomever they chose. Then the LORD said, "My Spirit shall not strive with man forever, because he also is flesh; nevertheless his days shall be one hundred and twenty years." The Nephilim were on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of men, and they bore children to them. Those were the mighty men who were of old, men of renown.”

I think that the Sons of God, Seth’s bloodline came down and intermarried with the daughters of Cain. In verse 4 it says, “The Nephilim were on the earth in those days,” and I believe these were from the line of Cain because they had chose to rebel against God. Also it is implied that their existence was before the intermarriages. Because of this reason all of man had become corrupt and God only found favor with Noah and his family.

After the flood Noah planted a vineyard and became drunk of the wine. In his drunkenness he passed out and his sons took notice of his naked condition. Shem and Japheth walked backwards into the tent of Noah and covered him. It is speculated that Noah’s grandson Canaan went in afterward and did some sexual immorality to Noah and for that Noah cursed him. Canaan then fled and settled in the land named after him which was Canaan. Genesis 9:23-26 “But Shem and Japheth took a garment and laid it upon both their shoulders and walked backward and covered the nakedness of their father; and their faces were turned away, so that they did not see their father's nakedness. When Noah awoke from his wine, he knew what his youngest son had done to him. So he said, "Cursed be Canaan; A servant of servants He shall be to his brothers." He also said, "Blessed be the LORD, The God of Shem; And let Canaan be his servant.”

In the days of Joshua spies were sent into the Promised Land, which was Canaan, and reported seeing Nephilim. Again these were mighty wicked men given to all kinds of evil. Numbers 13:33 “There also we saw the Nephilim (the sons of Anak are part of the Nephilim); and we became like grasshoppers in our own sight, and so we were in their sight.”

This then leaves question one, “The idea that these giants could have come from normal human unions seems unlikely at best. I agree that the angels could not procreate in and of themselves, but I believe that they inhabited the bodies of humans, most likely from Canaan’s bloodline, and in that way passed their corrupt seed on to the women.”

There are giants today but not the size we are talking about here. I think to find the answer is to look at the effect of the atmospheric pressure in the day before the flood. A key to this is the canopy of water in the stratosphere. In Genesis 1:6-8 we read, “Then God said, "Let there be an expanse in the midst of the waters, and let it separate the waters from the waters." God made the expanse, and separated the waters which were below the expanse from the waters which were above the expanse; and it was so. God called the expanse heaven. And there was evening and there was morning, a second day.” the word expanse, or as in other versions of the bible Firmament, today means sky. So we need to look at exactly what God was saying with the word expanse. In Genesis 1:20 it become more clear. “Then God said, "Let the waters teem with swarms of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth in the open expanse of the heavens.” What God was saying is that the expanse was the area between to two waters. The water in the stratosphere, the sky where the birds flew, and the water below the sky which is the sea, is how it was in the origin of creation.

Prior to the flood the earth was watered by springs and mist. Genesis 2:6 “But a mist used to rise from the earth and water the whole surface of the ground.” In Hebrews 11:7 we also read, “By faith Noah, being warned by God about things not yet seen, in reverence prepared an ark for the salvation of his household, by which he condemned the world, and became an heir of the righteousness which is according to faith.” Rain could be the correct understanding of “things not yet seen,” or it could be referring to the Flood in general. The general belief is that it never rained prior to the flood.

This water canopy would have provided protection against cosmic radiation from outer space and blocking of dangerous X-rays and ultraviolet radiation. The atmosphere today blocks much of the dangerous radiation from the sun. Still a fair amount gets through, as overexposure to the sun can cause skin cancer. Before the flood the blocking of dangerous X-rays and gamma rays would probably have been much greater. This probably accounts for the much longer life spans of the patriarchs recorded in the Bible.

The Canopy of water would have also caused a greenhouse effect causing much warmer temperatures. This may explain why Mammoths preserved in the permafrost in Siberia have tropical vegetation in their stomachs.

Genesis 2:5-6 also indicates that prior to Adam, at least, but the plants were water by springs coming up from the ground. Neither does the bible mention rain prior to the flood. The greenhouse effect would also lessen the need for the water cycle. Also if Noah was the first to see a rainbow that further strengthens the canopy theory.

Genesis 7:11-12 describes how it rained for forty days and nights. It would be impossible for that much rain to fall today because there is not that much moisture present in the atmosphere today meaning there had to be a larger amount of water in the atmosphere in the days of Noah.  “In the six hundredth year of Noah's life, in the second month, on the seventeenth day of the month, on the same day all the fountains of the great deep burst open, and the floodgates of the sky were opened. The rain fell upon the earth for forty days and forty nights.”

There are several ancient cultures that have legends of a canopy type phenomenon. An example would be the Babylonian creation accounts, Enuma Elish, which mentions fog, clouds, or mist covering the earth.

Other evidences of the canopy and its greenhouse effect are fossils of palm trees in Alaska, crocodiles in New Jersey, and petrified wood in the desert all suggest a warmer climate in historic times. Genesis mentions seasons in the creation accounts. The seasonal temperatures of summer and winter, heat and cold, are not mentioned in scripture until after the flood.

Increased atmospheric Pressure would have been caused by a canopy causing heavier air. Heavier air would have allowed prehistoric flying reptiles like the Pteranodon. A Pteranodon male was twenty and half feet from wing tip to wing tip. In today’s thinner atmosphere it is not likely that a reptile of this size could fly.

Amber is commonly used in jewelry for ladies. Amber is actually fossilized tree sap, and frequently contains either insects, or bubbles of air. Amber specimens have been tested and have produced oxygen levels containing 32% which is much higher than the 21% found in the atmosphere today.

Before the flood there were certain benefits for planet earth with a canopy of water in the stratosphere creating a higher content of oxygen and a lack of dangerous radiation. The conditions described in the Garden of Eden and throughout the early chapters of Genesis were probably reflected all over the planet.

Early fossils have shown the abundance of vegetation, animals, birds, and fish because of the warmer and more constant temperature, the higher levels if Oxygen and Carbon Dioxide. The Fossils also show that humans, animals, birds, insects, and fish were much larger.

There is a general teaching that early man was primitive. This is certainly incorrect.  Adam and Eve were created in the image of God, and actually would have been superior to us in every way.  Think about it: These two individuals held all of the genes that have been passed down through all generations until you and me. Because of the protective effect of the water canopy, there was protection from damaging ultraviolet rays and gamma rays, with probably much lower incidence of consequent diseases such as cancer and fetal malformations. Because of the higher oxygen levels, the high blood oxygen levels would have contributed to extreme longevity, resistance to bacterial and viral diseases, and greater metabolic efficiency, with consequent greatly enhanced athletic ability. The average age of man before Noah's Flood was 912 years. Today it is 70- 80

The Bible describes giants, before and after Noah's Flood. In Samuel 17:4 “Then a champion came out from the armies of the Philistines named Goliath, from Gath, whose height was six cubits and a span.” That is approximately nine feet tall. In Deuteronomy 3:11 the bed of Og was fourteen feet long and six feet wide. “For only Og king of Bashan was left of the remnant of the Rephaim. Behold, his bedstead was an iron bedstead; it is in Rabbah of the sons of Ammon. Its length was nine cubits and its width four cubits by ordinary cubit.”

This would account for the ones who were called Nephilim in the days of Noah and before the flood. The giants of after the flood are quite a normal thing as well as there are some giants even today. Even basketball players in my time have become taller and more muscular. For me the key here is not so much in the physical aspects but in the spiritual. As man continues to fall deeper and deeper into his depravity the stage is rapidly being set for the end times. When I was younger I wondered how so many people would follow a man such as Hitler. But my understanding is becoming clearer. The world is coming to a complete rebellion of God’s truth because man has become so wicked that even he himself cannot face it. The heart of man is so full of deceit that he asks as Pilate did on the day of the crucifixion, “What is truth?” (John 18:38) You and I my friend have a good work to do, equipping our flock that God has entrusted to us and telling the good news to every ear that will hear

They could not have been Nephilim from prior to the flood but were men who had become so depraved of mind much like the seed of Cain and now the seed of Canaan.

My conclusion is that the Nephilim are men that are so depraved and wicked, so far from the love of God that they are most likely under the control of Satan himself. God once destroyed all on the earth because of them in the Flood. God has destroyed cities because of them. (Sodom and Gomorrah) And in the end time He will destroy the earth with fire because of them and cast them all into the lake of fire.
